Scientific evidence supports the recommendation to follow a whole food, plant based diet for healthier looking skin. Population studies have found that healthy diets tend to be associated with less severe facial aging. This is likely because unhealthy foods may increase the oxidative stress load, be pro inflammatory, and contain or produce advanced glycation end products, whereas healthier foods may provide protection by having an inside out sunscreen effect, stimulating collagen production and DNA repair. This could help explain why eating predominantly meat and junk is associated with more wrinkles, while having lots of fruits, vegetables, and nuts has the opposite effect. Indeed, eating more healthfully may reduce wrinkling, which could actually save lives. You may start making healthier food choices to maintain a more youthful appearance, but you’ll also get all the chronic disease prevention benefits as a happy, positive side effect.
