Anti Jewish sentiment in the Roman Empire was one of the factors that led early Christians to distinguish themselves from the Jews by adopting Sunday as a new day of worship. Conflicts between the Jews and the Roman government were common, and this came to a climax in AD 70, when the Roman army invaded Jerusalem and destroyed the temple.
