Share#lgbtq #lgbtqchristians #aliciajohnston Welcome back to Advent Next, a theological podcast curated for curious faith discussions. This week, we are having a controversial conversation regarding the Bible and LGBTQ Adventists with Pastor Alicia Johnston who wrote a book by that very name. It is currently available only through the kickstarter campaign which is ending very shortly so you want to be sure to get your copy of her book “The Bible and LGBTQ Adventists” before it ends in the next week. You can find the link in the description. 0:00:00 Introduction 0:04:40 Who is Pastor Alicia Johnston? 0:09:20 Collin Cook and Adventist history with ex gay therapy 0:10:48 Coming out LGBTQ in the Church 0:14:58 Finding empathy with LGBTQ struggles 0:16:30 What can pastors do to protect LGBTQ persons? 0:18:55 What to do if your kid comes out as LGBTQ? 0:25:46 What does Leviticus 18 say about homosexuality? 0:32:12 What was really going on in Sodom and Gomorrah? 0:37:22 Genesis 1, homosexuality and gay marriage Passions often run hot when discussing LGBTQ Christians. We hear about gay conversion therapy, the ex gay movement, or even remaining gay, but celibate. But there’s not alot of affirming theology and there is a misconception that there is only one true biblical view on homosexuality and gay marriage. However, there are a lot of questions that many scholars are either choosing to ignore, while others are dive deeper into it since it’s a topic that needs more study. As a woman in ministry, I realize that there will never be a unified opinion on women’s ordination. Some people look at the Bible and see the affirmation of women, their equality, their innate dignity and gifting in ministry, others look at this same Bible and find no grounds for women to occupy the place of a pastor. Both people are using the same text to come to vastly different conclusions. My hope is that this conversation will give room for freedom of conscience, for allowing others to hold different views and not denigrate their character or question their devotion to Christ just because they came to a different conclusion than you. So we all need to walk with respect towards each other and the unique journey that each person has endeavored to take in this one wild life we have been given. I hope this conversation sheds some light on the journey, experience and theology of LGBTQ Adventists. On this episode we’ll tackle pastoral methodologies along with a little theology, but you’ll need to stay tuned for part 2 if you want the whole picture.
