O método que eles usaram para escolher Matias pode parecer estranho, mas o lançamento de sortes era uma maneira de tomar decisões já há muito tempo estabelecida (por exemplo, Lv 16:5 10; Nm 26:55). Além disso, a escolha era entre dois candidatos previamente reconhecidos e de qualificações equivalentes, e não um passo rumo ao desconhecido. Os fiéis também oraram a Deus, acreditando que o resultado refletiria a Sua vontade (compare com Pv 16:33). E não há evidência de que a decisão tenha jamais sido contestada. Após o Pentecostes, o lançamento de sortes tornou se desnecessário em razão da orientação direta do Espírito (At 5:3; 11:15 18; 13:2; 16:6 9).
